Bestselling author Frank Worrall digs deep to highlight the similarities between Glasgow Celtic and Manchester United. How is this book relevant to Sunderland fans I hear you ask? Well seen as so the messiah Roy Keane has played for both clubs, not to mention the fact we’ve recruited a lot of players from each in the last few years I thought it would be worthwhile to see what the craic was behind this ‘special relationship.’
Worrall effectively paints a picture of the tragedies and triumphs that have befallen both clubs and looks at the selfless base behind their formation. He also discusses why United and Celtic became the first two British clubs to win the European, not to mention the fact they have both had a brilliant but tragic star within their ranks (George Best and Jimmy Johnstone) making this book a lot more interesting than a neutral fan would think.
Both clubs come from successful and historical backgrounds and the link they have comes as no surprise. As a result the book gives Celtic United fans who proudly swear their allegiance to both teams a voice. Rod Stewart, arguably the most famous fan of both sides, explains his love for Celtic and United and he describes how it came about that both teams feature in the lyrics of his song ‘You’re in my Heart.’
It is fair to say that a book like this is extremely rare in football. Even though both teams are from different countries and hardly ever play each other, it is a refreshing change to see fans from both sides embracing each other so affectionately, especially when you think both are competing for the best club in Britain crown.
This book won’t take a ridiculous amount of time to read but in that time I guarantee that you’ll be intrigued into how this relationship was formed, granted I hate Man United (like most people) and have no real love for Celtic but credit where credits due they have created something untouchable in the world of football and something that will no doubt last a long time.
