Everyone knows Gordon Ramsey; he’s loud, rude, stubborn as hell and has a mouth as filthy as a Geordie hair brush. Therefore his bestselling real story, Humble Pie, seems a pretty straight forward read, a lot of swear words and obscenities, not to mention a few cooking references and what not.
Well let me tell you that Humble Pie tells the full story of how Gordon Ramsey has become the world’s most famous and infamous chef. In this book he is brutally honest about his life and talks in depth about his difficult childhood and his brother’s heroin addiction which for the first time shows an emotional side to the hard faced chef.
Despite Ramsey’s obvious love for cooking, everyone seems to think this was his dream career, far from it. He was a professional footballer earning his living for Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers before injury cruelly cut short his dream, and at that propelled him into another exciting era in his life, cooking.
When you realise what Ramsey has been through in his life then you can fully understand why he is the media powerhouse that he is today. In the book Ramsey talks frankly and truthfully about everything in his life which leads him onto his father’s alcoholism and violence. He also comments on how this affected his relationship with his mother and siblings. However despite his tough childhood his family were united when they all moved up to Glasgow to see Ramsey start his career as a footballer at the young age of 15. However he only lasted three years due to injury and once again, Ramsey had to struggle his way to the other side of the tunnel and come out fighting again.
And that he did.
He learnt his trade as a chef in Paris under Albert Roux and as the saying goes, the rest is history. Gordon Ramsey currently (emphasis on the word currently) owns seven Michelin-starred restaurants as well as many more across England, it is fair to say the lad has done well for himself.
The final part of the book is Ramsey commenting on how he copes with the impact of fame on himself and his family, not to mention his enormous television success as well as his own drive for success. Gordon Ramsey has lead a complex life, full of enormous highs and enormous lows which have undoubtedly moulded him into what he is today, one thing you can say for him is he’s definitely got the will to do well and after reading this book, I would not be surprised if he continued to grow and grow.
